SX Magazine Articles for July 2008

This month there are two great articles published that use an SX micro as the core component. The first article was in the July 2008 Servo magazine and used an SX28. The SX was attached to motor encoders for receiving the pulse-trains and scaling the values so it could be read by the main computer. The article is by Robert Doerr (a.k.a. RobotWorkshop on the Parallax Forum). This article is an excellent example of how a low cost microcontroller can be used to transform or scale signals. Of course the logic could have also been done with discrete components, but with the SX micro even more functionality was added such as the ability to change the scaling value on the fly with a serial protocol. Excellent article Robert!

The other article is in the Nuts & Volts July 2008 magazine. Jon Williams regularly uses the SX micro in his STAMP Applications column. This month he created an LED tail light addition for his vehicle. The tail light pulses and changes state when the brake is stepped on so that the drivers behind him will notice that he is slowing down. I am sure this addition will reduce the likely hood of getting rear ended in traffic!

Two great articles - thank you guys! If you find other articles about the SX micro or that use the SX, please drop us a note so we can review them and let others know about it through this blog.

Welcome to the SX Microcontroller Blog

Hello! Welcome to a blog about the SX microcontroller. Allow me a moment to introduce myself.

My name is Timothy D. Swieter and I am the principal for Brilldea: purveyor of prototyping goods. I have a bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering and since I was young I have been fascinated with all things electrical and mechanical. While in college I started to tinker with microcontrollers and robotics and since then I have created several projects. Currently I am employed at Birket Engineering and create control systems for theme park shows and rides as well as design lighting products for the theme park and architectural market.

A few weeks ago I received the SX Tech Tool Kit from Parallax. Over the last few years I have used several microcontrollers such as the Basic Stamp, OOPIC, Rabbit Semiconductor, Texas Instrument MSP430, Cypress PSoC, and my favorite, the Propeller. I haven’t really latched on to using a dedicated micro for every project because each project has different needs (more on that later). Now that I have a kit to learn about the SX, I thought I would share my learning experience with others that want to learn about the SX as I become familiar with the SX.
